Designing for outdoor living

Designing for Outdoor Living

By Richelle Langdon on 21/07/2021

Now is a great time to consider designing for outdoor living! We all know that the Australian climate lends itself to alfresco living for a good chunk of the year, and the start of summer in Sydney has been consistently warm. With the help of these style tips you can easily create your own outdoor oasis! So let’s get out there and enjoy the summer sun.

Pots, pots and maybe some more pots

Honestly, we think the more plants you have the better! Plants can be an inexpensive way to change a space. It will bring instant style and bright pops of greenery liven up a space. They are also a great way to screen out neighbours and create intimacy. You can have fun with coloured pots or you can go for more neutral tones and let the plants do the talking. Also, vary heights and textures to create interest.

You don’t have to limit it to pots on the deck, hanging pots and green walls add ambiance to a space. Why not include herbs with their added bonus of fragrance and taste! Hanging Rosemary plants are very popular at the moment.

Table styling

This is a great opportunity to personalise your table and express your style.  Get creative with groupings of vases with foliage or flowers and candles on trays, timber boards or even palm husks to make a great center piece.  Think about varying the heights to create focal points and stick with a tight colour palette for harmony.

Cushions and rugs

Soft furnishings can really bring a space to life. Scatter cushions add vibrancy to your outdoor lounge and rugs can help zone the areas, creating a relaxing ambiance!

There is an endless range of outdoor rugs and cushions to choose from.  You can really have some fun out here so think of a theme and go for it!!

Decorations for the wall

If you have a wall that is looking a bit bare, why not add a little something to make the room feel whole. Add texture with rattan and woven hangings, they are extremely popular right now and project a coastal vibe to a space, instantly relaxing you and your guests.

If your space is tight, why not try a mirror to open up the space. There are so many shapes and styles that you can choose from.

Install Outdoor Lighting

Another way to instantly change the ambiance of your outdoor space is with lighting. Why not place a pendant light over the outside dining table to give the space an intimate feel.

Or why not string up some festoon lights to create that festive outdoor summer vibe.

If you need any ideas for your outside areas we’d love to help you plan, source and style the right items for you!
