Well, unlike The Block, nothing, and I mean nothing, ever gets done in a week or even a month for that matter.
Designing a kitchen requires planning and then more planning. Attention to detail is paramount and when these things are rushed, minor details can become major problems. Things need to be millimetre perfect. Yes, that’s right… millimetres can cause all kinds of chaos.
So how long is this kitchen design going to take? I’m here to give you the low down on what to expect…
Design Session
Every project starts with a kitchen design session where we deep dive into your specific requirements, spark creativity and define the design direction. (see consultation types here) Review of the architectural plans if building or site measure and masking tape on the floor if renovating. We take lots of photographs of all spaces for reference and to look back and go ‘ oh wow’!
Spatial Planning
Experts in seeing hidden potential, our brains love flipping rooms, removing walls and working out ways to cleverly disguise flaws. We map your kitchen floorplan. Sometimes there are a couple of layouts for your approval, after which we detail every elevation, and specify every inclusion and finish.
Our detailed drawings package allows you to obtain apples-for-apples quotations, but more importantly, ensures the end product is what you thought you were going to get (not your joiners interpretation of what you thought.) Believe me, I have seen this so many times and it is not where you want to be!
Finishes & Fixtures
I love this part. Pulling together colour and material palettes for my clients’ end enjoyment makes me so happy. Here, based on the brief put together at the initial consultation, we contemplate materials and their placement. We combine textures, colours and contrasts for visual excitement, touch and feel.
Door profiles, handles, splashbacks and benchtops as well as taps and sinks all come together here for presentation to you with physical samples and 3D renders.
Final Documentation
Once all selections are made, we schedule everything, and final documentation is confirmed. These handover documents ensure minimal mistakes. At this point, the time frame is approx. 6 weeks from the initial consultation. In priority cases, we can try to accommodate shorter lead times.
Appoint Builder / Joiner
With your fully documented project at the ready you are now able to contact builders/joiners to discuss the work your project requires, and the costs involved.
In our experience, let us handle this for you. We work with tradespeople daily and can determine who is a good fit for your project and for us to work with for the duration of the build or renovation. There are many touch points with trades during site checks, check measures and solving issues as they arise. A good fit equals harmony and a millimetre perfect build.
If you have engaged us having already appointed someone, we will then organise to meet them and their team to get acquainted and explain our vision for the project.
Your joiner will usually require 6-8 weeks for fabrication and 2 weeks for installation for smaller projects.
Now we are off paper and it’s all becoming real!
Demolition and/or Site Evaluation
If this is a renovation, we will conduct a walk-through with your builder and discuss structural changes such as moving/adding walls and windows etc. Your builder will be looking after this stage and timing will vary depending on the scope of the work required.
Once there is a building envelope the following trades will be onsite:
Plumbers & Electricians
“Rough in” of plumbing and all wiring.
Plasterer’s
Walls and ceilings are lined and plastered.
Flooring
The laying of either tile/timber or both. If you are having polished concrete this would have been poured prior to lining the walls. And then there’s the tiler for the bathrooms.
Joinery Measure
Here we will meet the joiner with the drawing package we provided and walk through each space. They will measure precisely, and some minor changes will be made. Due to the construction process, there is usually slight variations in dimensions. This is millimetre perfect time.
Installation
Installation is usually around 6 weeks from measure and depending on the time of year and workload. This can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks depending on the size of the project. It’s getting exciting!!
Stone Measure
Benchtops and splashbacks are measured with millimetre accuracy. Usually, stone but could be timber or concrete. Consideration of joins is important visually and structurally, so we are on-site here to discuss placement.
Stone Installation
Oh wow, this is the defining moment, it is like the icing on the cake!
Tiler – Splash Back
If you haven’t opted for stone or glass your tiler will return and your beautiful splash back tile will take centre stage.
Plumber & Electrician
These guys are back to “fit off”, everything now fully functions. Yay!
Painter
This guy may have been in before but is back to finish final coats and touch-ups. It is all so fresh!
Joiner / Builder
Returns with us for a walkthrough of any deficiency and rectifies.
